1,400 kg Paneer Seized in Surat Found Sub-Standard; Lab Reports Confirm Industrial Acid

Surat: Alarming findings have emerged from the laboratory analysis of around 1,400 kg of suspected paneer seized earlier this month from Pandesara. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has declared the product “sub-standard,” revealing the presence of vegetable oil and traces of industrial acid instead of natural milk fat, posing a serious public health risk.
The samples, collected during a March 3 raid at a unit in Bhidbhanjan Society, failed quality tests at the Public Health Laboratory. SMC Food Safety Officer D.K. Thakar said the paneer showed extremely low milk fat content. Instead, high levels of beta-sitosterol, an indicator of vegetable oil, particularly palm oil were detected. Authorities have initiated action under food safety laws.
Investigators also uncovered the use of industrial-grade acetic acid in the manufacturing process. Normally, food-grade agents such as citric acid are used to curdle milk. Officials said the use of chemical-grade acid to cut costs could lead to serious health complications, including kidney damage and long-term illnesses such as colon cancer.
The accused, identified as Mahesh Sharma, allegedly produced “analogue paneer” using palm oil, milk solids (powder), and water. The mixture was processed to replicate the texture and appearance of genuine paneer, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between real and fake products.
While authentic paneer typically sells for ₹400–₹450 per kg, the adulterated product was being sold at ₹180–₹220 per kg.
Officials also found that the accused held an FSSAI licence registered in Vasai, Maharashtra, but was illegally operating the manufacturing unit in Pandesara.
Police said the operation had been running for nearly two years, initially from Ganeshnagar before shifting locations. The unit reportedly produced around 400 kg of fake paneer daily, supplying it to small dairies, eateries, and street vendors across Surat.
During the raid, authorities seized paneer, palm oil, and machinery worth over ₹28 lakh. DCP Rajdeep Singh Nakum said a significant quantity of the adulterated product may have already been consumed in the city. The SMC is now expected to intensify inspections of dairies, hotels, and food outlets, particularly those serving paneer-based dishes. DeshGujarat
