Gujarat Police Launch ‘NARIT AI’, India’s First AI Tool for NDPS Cases
April 10, 2026
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Police has become the first in the country to develop an artificial intelligence-driven tool called ‘NARIT AI’ (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), aimed at strengthening narcotics investigation and enforcement, an official release said.
According to Gujarat Police, NARIT AI is a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-based system designed to assist law enforcement agencies in handling complex narcotics cases under the NDPS legal framework. By integrating legal provisions, case laws, and investigative procedures, the system provides real-time analytical support to investigating officers.
This is the first-of-its-kind AI-powered tool in India to be used by any state police or law enforcement agency. The application was developed by Western Railway police, Vadodara division, in collaboration with a Mumbai-based AI startup.
“We have adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards narcotics-related crimes and will leave no stone unturned—from registering cases to securing convictions, by using all available tools, including AI,” said Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi.
The application was conceptualised under Director General of Police (DGP) K.L.N. Rao and Surat City Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, and was initiated by Abhay Soni, Superintendent of Police (SP), Western Railway, Vadodara.
“Earlier, investigations were handled only by specialised police staff, which created workload and administrative delays. This tool will act as a force multiplier by leveraging the latest RAG-based AI technology and will enable every investigating officer to conduct proper, procedure-compliant investigations, thereby improving the conviction rate in NDPS cases. Since the application has been developed and trained using historical cases from the High Courts and the Supreme Court, Bare Acts, and government guidelines, the probability of hallucinations is minimal and procedural accuracy will be high,” said Abhay Soni, SP, Western Railway, Vadodara, the officer behind the tech-driven initiative.
“The key challenge in the investigation of NDPS cases is procedural compliance. We have seen in the past that, despite strong evidence, the accused often benefits from gaps in investigation procedures, resulting in acquittal. This application will provide a comprehensive report to every investigating officer, who can refer to it while making final decisions. This will help prevent procedural gaps, improve the quality of investigations, and ultimately enhance the conviction rate in NDPS cases. Moreover, this tool can be operated by any rank police staff and easy handling of the tool ensures faster adoption of new technology,” officials added.
How will it help the investigating officers?
First, the police need to upload the FIR into the application, which will generate an analysis report based on its content. The report will assess the strengths and weaknesses of the case and suggest legal remedies.
This technology will provide comprehensive investigative guidance to police personnel in NDPS cases by offering inputs based on various High Court and Supreme Court judgments, ensuring legal procedural compliance, identifying weaknesses in the FIR from a legal perspective, outlining do’s and don’ts, preparing an investigation plan, and providing an evidence checklist. The application will enable investigating officers to avoid procedural lapses in NDPS cases.
What does this new AI-powered system do?
The application takes FIR content as input and provides a detailed analysis of the case along with report generation. The model has been developed using the latest RAG-based AI technology and is trained on historical High Court and Supreme Court judgments related to bail and trial in NDPS cases, the Bare Acts of BNS, BNSS, BSA, the NDPS Act, 1985, as well as government guidelines and circulars related to NDPS.
The RAG technology-based AI system analyses the FIR using only its trained database and does not rely on open-source internet searches, thereby eliminating the possibility of hallucinations. The application follows recent Gujarat High Court guidelines on the use of AI and, as per these guidelines, is classified as a private AI system developed specifically for Gujarat Police and not accessible to the general public.
Prediction for prosecution
In addition to providing investigation guidelines, the tool is capable of predicting courtroom-level defence arguments and offering rebuttals based on historical case laws of the High Courts and the Supreme Court. The RAG-based AI technology minimises hallucinations (false assumptions) and delivers results strictly based on trained case laws and legal provisions.
How the AI tool works
• Police officers need to upload the FIR (First Information Report) into the system
• The tool analyses the case and generates a detailed report
• It highlights strengths and weaknesses of the case
• It suggests legal steps and improvements
The system also provides:
• Guidelines based on court judgments
• Proper investigation procedures
• A checklist of evidence
• Do’s and don’ts for officers
