State-level Girnar climbing competition flagged off

As many as 994 participants (790 boys and 204 girls) are participating in Girnar climbing event today in Junagadh. District Collector Alok Pandey flagged of the event at around 7.00 am.
A race to climb Gujarat’s tallest mountain Girnar was organized for the first time in 1971 by Phulchhab daily. After 1980 the state government took over the event.
Every year two climbing competitions are held here. One for Gujarat and the other for national participants.
Out of total 994 participants, 683 are from Junagadh/Gir Somnath districts while 311 are from other 13 districts. Porbandar, Surendranagar, Valsad, Kutch, Dahod, Sabarkantha, Kheda, Dwarka and Ahmedabad districts are represented by only one participant each.
