Surat budget: Major allocation to BRTS and Urban housing projects

As per the annual budget draft proposed by the Municipal Commissioner of Surat for year 2015-16, Rs. 1506 development works are planned, of which 20.67% amount will be spent for housing, 15.64% for BRTS, 12.17% for roads and 6.82% for bridges. Development works will be done by spending revenue surplus.
Allocations:
-BRTS: Rs. 392 crore
-Urban housing: Rs. 376 crore
-Town planning: Rs. 251 crore
-Drainage: Rs. 237 crore
-CC road: Rs. 180 crore
-Bridges: Rs. 171 crore
-Water supply: Rs. 119 crore
-Solid waste and SMIMER hospital: Rs. 39 crore
-Fire: Rs. 32 crore
It should be mentioned that at present there are 83 city buses in Surat. BRTS first phase has been launched on Udhna main road. From February onwards, the canal corridor will see BRTS functioning there. Intelligent Traffic Management System(ITMS), electronic ticketing machine based system, traffic school, speed control system are other areas of expenditure so far as BRTS project is concerned.
Fire charge proposed:
Municipal Commissioner has proposed fire charge collection from non-residential buildings. The SMC according to commissioner spends Rs. 25 crore per year to provide fire service. For effective execution of this service, commissioner has proposed collection of Rs. 25/month charge from each shop and Rs. 42/month charge from each industrial unit. Thus each shop will need to pay annually Rs. 300 and industrial unit Rs. 500 for fire charge.
