Farmers and locals of Prantij pocket of Sabarkantha district in north Gujarat have issued ultimatum of 20th February to government to make decision on draconian toll tax hike and provision of service road. If there’s no positive response from government, locals have announced blockage of highway and bandh agitation on 21 February.
Demanding a facility of service road for locals and reversal of massive toll tax hike, local villagers led by Prantij MLA Mahendrasinh Bariya and local BJP president have decided to observe bandh in Prantij on 21 February. On same day they will also block the highway connecting Ahmedabad to Himmat nagar as part of their agitation.
Early this month, a group of 150 villagers had ransacked a toll both office demanding the same.
The villagers are protesting against recent 10-fold hike in monthly pass rate at this toll booth. Monthly passes are issued to citizens of nearby villagers so that they can pass through the toll booth without paying toll tax. While original rate of single pass was Rs. 250, the new rate is Rs. 2500 according to protestors.
Villagers are joined by local units of both BJP and Congress party in their non-political agitation.
