Gujarat govt seeks Environment clearance for ‘Statue of Unity’ project

The site for Statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (Statue of Unity) is near the shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary and located within 10 km from boundary of wildlife sanctuary.
The area of Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary, earlier known as Dhumkhal sloth Bear Sanctuary, was increased to 607.7 sq.km from 150.8 sq.km. as a part of Environment Safeguard Measures.
Forest & Environment Department, Government of Gujarat has submitted a proposal to Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India for declaring eco-sensitive zone for Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary November 2010 and February 2013.
A Proposal for revision for declaring Eco- sensitive zone for peripheral area of 54766.90 hectare for Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary was submitted by Forest & Environment Department, Govt. of Gujarat to Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India earlier which has been revised again sent in which the state government has requested to notify the eco sensitive zone for Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary at the earliest.
This move will clarify the issue and the Statue of Unity site would no longer require recommendations from National Board for Wildlife under the Wildlife Protection Act.
