Current spell likely to bring down rain deficit figure in Gujarat by 10-15%

The current spell of monsoon rains in Gujarat, caused by low pressure over West Madhya Pradesh and Eastern Rajasthan, is likely to bring down the overall rain deficit in the state by 10 to 15 per cent, official sources said today.

The total rain deficit, which is around 39 percent at present is expected to come down by 10 to 15 percent owning to the ongoing spell of rains which was likely to continue for at least three more days with many bouts of heavy to very heavy downpour at some places, In-charge Director of the Ahmedabad Met Center, Ms. Manorama Mohanty said.

Meanwhile, several places including Ahmedabad city, capital Gandhinagar and other northern districts have received moderate to heavy showers since morning today while in last 24 hours a total of 195 talukas in 31 districts have witnessed rain with Quant in Chhota Udepur district recording the highest of 21 cm. Other places with prominent rain figures were Kadana (dist Panchmahal) 12 cm, Dhanera (dist Banaskantha) 11 cm, Talod (dist Sabarkantha) 11 cm, Tharad (dist Banaskantha) 11 cm , Gandhinagar (dist Gandhinagar) 10 cm, Umerpada (dist Surat) 10 cm, Mahesana (dist Mehsana) 10 cm, Radhanpur (dist Patan) 9 cm and Umrala (dist Bhavnagar) 9 cm.

The met office has issued warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain in some areas of north Gujarat and Kutch during next 24 to 48 hours, Ms. Mohanty said.

On the other hand the total Monsoon rainfall has crossed 35 percent mark today with overall state average of more than 800 mm of rain so far. Saurashtra with almost 46 percent was highest region-wise while East Central Gujarat was lowest at around 26 percent. Kuctch and North Gujarat has seen almost 30 percent rain so far while South Gujarat has a figure of around 33 percent.
