Senior ETV Gujarati reporter Atul Dayani was killed in a car accident yesterday night.
Atul was on way to Ahmedabad after completing election day reporting in Kutch district. There were two other persons in car – a driver and camera person Sagar who are safe. It is learnt that as the driver started inquiring about the route for Ahmedabad repeatedly, Atul took the hold of steering and started driving the car himself during night. About 80 km from Ahmedabad on Malvan-Viramgam stretch, the car accident occurred when car fell in depth next to one side of the highway.
A team of colleague journalists rushed to the spot from Ahmedabad as soon as they heard about this bad news. There was a feeling that night driving on highways must be avoided and even prohibited by media organizations for safety of staff unless in extra ordinary circumstances.
Atul, a science graduate who entered journalism in late 1990s with first job in Gujarat Samachar also worked for TV9, Sandesh and other media houses. His core interest was crime beat, but for last some time in his late 30s he was also into political reporting. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. His last rites would take place at his native place in Lathi.
