Water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada reservoir reaches 125.34 m, rising at 2 to 3 cm per hour

Vadodara:

The water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam reservoir, the lifeline of Gujarat’s water supply, has reached 125.34 meter till 11 am today and is still rising at a fairly good speed of 2 to 3 cm per hour due to increased inflow from Madhya Pradesh.

As per official data received from SSNNL flood control unit here, the inflow at 11 am was 63610 cusec and outflow was 10016 cuses.

The water level which after seeing a rise of over 14 meters in around 23 days had started declining on September 8 due to heavy decline in inflow from Madhya Pradesh and increase of outflow due to supply for agricultural needs but again started rising from September 9 due to running of hydel power units at Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar in MP despite lessening of rainfall activities. In last two days the water level has seen around a meter (89cm) of rise.

The even better thing for Gujarat is that the live water storage was also rising despite continuous increase in outflow for meeting the agricultural needs as per the recent decision of the state government to supply water in all the canals for saving the standing crops due to delay in another spell of monsoon rain.

At 11 am the live storage was 2185.43 million cubic meter ( 37.38% of total live storage capacity). It has also seen a significant rise of more than 2% in the last 2 days.

And the good news is that the increased inflow of water from MP side is likely to continue for sometime as the hydel units in the state due to running of which the water has arrived are still running.

Notably the new overflow mark of the dam after installation of sluice gates last year is 138.48meter. It was 121.92 m earlier on.

Though the river bed hydel unit of SSNNL is not running yet owing to supply to canals for irrigation purposes two of the 50 MW capacity each units of canal head power house were running.
