Gujarat BJP demands disqualification of all Congress candidates
Gandhinagar, 27 September, 2010
Gujarat BJP has asked Gujarat state election commission to disqualify all civic poll candidates of Congress party in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Janmagar, citing reason that ‘K’ and ‘Kh’ forms which are about party mandate and symbol are not filed by any of the Congress candidates.
BJP state legal cell’s J.J Patel said that the prescribed forms had to be submitted by Congress candidates before 3.00 pm on last day of filing nominations, and election official and Secretary were to be informed, but this procedure has not been followed by Congress party candidates. This is fit case that suggests disqualification of all Congress candidates.
BJP’s this demand created havoc in Congress party. Many Congress candidates gathered at Surat, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot Collector offices. In Vadodara, Congress candidates sat on fast to protest BJP’s alleged tactics. In Ahmedabad, Congress candidate Badruddin Sheikh told reporters that party’s spokesperson Manish Doshi had submitted the candidates list to the Election commission at proper time. Sheikh said, though Congress had not submitted candidate wise individual form, one single form was filled up and submitted, and it is allowed in the case of national party.
Meanwhile Congress party called a press conference and clarified that while form ‘K’ has to be submitted at two places, another form ‘Kh’ has to be submitted only at one places. Leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil told media persons, that if state election commission takes any decision under pressure of state government, Congress party would challenge the decision in High Court and will fight upto Supreme Court. Gohil said, his party has followed all needed procedures, and BJP’s allegations are baseless.
In Gandhinagar, the ministers Saurabh Dalal and Nitin Patel went to state election commission office in connection with the form issue. Saurabh Dalal told media persons that Congress had submitted blank ‘Kh’ form to election commission, the act that is not permissible according to rules.
It should be mentioned that nomination forms for civic polls are being scrutinized today.
