In a welcome step, Gujarat government has ordered all districts to keep animal dispensaries open on Makarsankranti.
Gujarat celebrates Makarsankranti or Uttarayan every year on 14-15 January. Millions of people go to terrace and fly kites on these two days.
Due to glass paved string of kite, hundreds of birds suffer from injuries and many of them succumb to death or permanent defect.
To tackle this crisis, the state government has put ban on Chinese string which are lethal. However glass-paved string has attracted no ban. Therefore birds continue to suffer.
Number of NGOs and government’s forest department do appreciable job of carrying injured birds to hospital and their urgent treatment. For an example, dozens of operation on birds take place during two days of Uttarayan festival at Ahmedabad’s Vastrapur based Van Chetna Kendra which is run by Forest department.
In a welcome step, the state government has ordered all district animal dispensaries and polyclinics run by government to not to observe holiday and continue to function during Uttarayan to treat injured birds.
