The atmosphere in Ahmedabad at 12.00 noon on Sunday is similar to peak period of monsoon. It’s 12 noon, but it looks like 7.00 am outside. The roads and trees are wet.
It was cloudy yesterday, and IMD Gujarat office had predicted light rain on 1st(today) and 2nd March, but nobody had imagined so powerful thunderstorm. Early in the morning at around 5-6 am it was heavily raining. It continued for two-three hours.
As Holi is approaching, it’s already a double season – mixture of summer and winter. As it was not enough, now we have heavy rain here. It’s confusing. Measurement of shower in the morning was around 2 inch at most of the places.
There are reports of showers in almost all major places of Saurashtra, Sabarkantha in north Gujarat and Vadodara in central Gujarat. Unseasonal showers they are called.
As IMD Ahmedabad office Director Jayant Sarkar says, this unseasonal rain has been experienced due to western disturbances which also brought increase in cold couple of days back. Sarkar believes that this monsoon-like experience will continue for two days and the normal behavior of season will be witnessed from 3rd March onwards.
Meanwhile Ahmedabad is in holiday mood today and there’s minimum or no traffic on roads. People are enjoying a unique extended morning at home.
Concerns:
There are concerns being expressed on possible adverse impact of today’s unseasonal rain on agriculture crops and on the situation of swine flu in the state. Crops that are likely to suffer damage due to unseasonal rain include mango, chana and wheat.
