Gujarat govt extends Disturbed Areas Act for 5 years in areas of Viramgam town
December 02, 2024
Viramgam: In a recent government notification dated November 29, 2024, the Government of Gujarat declared certain areas within Viramgam Town in Ahmedabad District as “disturbed areas” under the Gujarat Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Act, 1991. This declaration, which applies to areas specified in the Schedule annexed to the notification, covers a five-year period, from November 29, 2024, to November 28, 2029.
The government’s decision follows the prolonged disruption of public order in the area, caused by riots and mob violence. The designated areas, falling under the jurisdiction of the Viramgam Town police station, will be subject to special provisions outlined in the Act to prevent the transfer of immovable property and to protect tenants from eviction during this turbulent period.
Additionally, the Gujarat Government has delegated the powers of the Collector, Ahmedabad, to the Prant Officer and Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Viramgam. The delegation of authority, effective immediately, empowers the Prant Officer to exercise all powers previously held by the Collector under sections 4, 5, and 5A of the Act.
This move aims to maintain public order and provide legal protection in the affected areas throughout the five-year period. DeshGujarat
