Holy month of Shravan begins in Gujarat

Holy month of Shravan kicks off today in Gujarat.

Shravan in Gujarat is celebrated as per Gujarati Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar which is different from other northern Indian states where Shravan begins little earlier.

In the month of Shravan, Shiv Mandirs attract huge crowd of visitors, particularly on Mondays. There’s importance of fasts during Shravan. People offer ‘bilva patra’ leafs to Shiv Linga in Shiv Mandirs during Shravan. Many people also offer milk too. Some people grow beard during Shravan.

Somnath Mahadev becomes capital of celebrities of Shravan.

Shravan Mahotsav celebrations at Somnath kicks off today and will continue till 13th September. Pilgrims from all over the nation will take part in Savalaksha(1.25 lakh) bilvapuja(offering of Bili patra leafs to Shiv Linga), Mahamrityinjay mantra, jap yagna(yagna with chanting), dhvaja rohan(offering of saffron religious faith over the temple) and puja vidhi.

Two big LED screens have been set up for darshan and aarti outside the mandir.

On Sundays, Mondays and festival days during the month of Shravan, the mandir Mandir will open at 4.00 am and continue to remain open till 10.00 pm. On other days of the month of Shravan, the mandir will open at 5.30 am and close at 10.00 pm.

Shri Somnath Mahadev shiva linga will dress 30 different shringars(decoration) during the month of Shravan.

Police band Junagadh will perform at evening aarti on 17th August. Janj dakla group will play dakla(a traditional music instrument) at evening aarti on 24th August. Ravan hattha artist Gopalbhai Barot and his group will perform at evening aarti on 31st August while bhungal, bhajan and dhol transa group will perform on 7th September at evening aarti. These arrangements have been made in cooperation with Gujarat Lokkala Foundation.
