Gujarat BJP gets its first Muslim Councillor in Municipal Corporations

Sofia Zahid Dal will become the first Muslim woman Councillor elected on BJP ticket in Gujarat. The BJP had fielded a total of 8 Muslims for Municipal Corporation elections in six cities – 4 in Ahmedabad, 2 in Jamnagar and 2 in Rajkot. While all candidates in other cities are defeated by their rivals, Sofia Zahid Dal from ward number 1 of Rajkot has emerged victorious on OBC seat reserved for women. Other three BJP Councillors in panel were Hindus and they too have won. Sofia is former Congress worker. Her husband Zahid had contested Rajkot Municipal Corporation elections in 2001 for Congress. Due to relations with BJP minister Vijaybhai Rupani, Sofia and her husband joined BJP. Sofia is Commerce graduate and mother of two daughters.
