Another India-Flagged LPG Tanker Green Sanvi Crosses Strait of Hormuz, Heads Towards Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, another India-flagged LPG carrier, Green Sanvi, has crossed the Strait of Hormuz, carrying around 46,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and is likely heading towards Gujarat.

The vessel’s safe transit on Friday night marks a significant development as India navigates disruptions in global fuel supply routes due to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. With this, Green Sanvi becomes the seventh Indian vessel to cross the strategically crucial strait, joining six others that have already reached Indian shores.

Government sources said Indian Navy warships have been kept on standby to assist merchant vessels if required, while the Centre continues diplomatic engagement with Iranian authorities to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the successful passage of Green Sanvi as a “victory for Indian diplomacy.”

“One more ship. One more victory for Indian diplomacy. LPG carrier Green Sanvi has crossed the Strait of Hormuz and is on its way home to India,” Sanghavi said in an X post.

In reply to Sanghavi, the Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai also highlighted the strong historical ties between India and Iran, reaffirming its commitment to continued cooperation.

“India, and Gujarat in particular, hold a cherished place in our shared history, having graciously welcomed those from our land centuries ago. Building on this enduring civilizational bond, we remain committed to further strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation,” the Consulate General of Iran said in a post.

Notably, at least 17 Indian vessels remain stranded west of the Strait of Hormuz, including LPG carriers Green Asha and Jag Vikram, which are expected to sail to India soon.

Officials also confirmed that India’s ports continue to operate normally, with close coordination between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of External Affairs, and Indian missions abroad.

The crisis in West Asia, which escalated following US-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28 and subsequent retaliation by Iran, has impacted global energy supply chains and heightened maritime security concerns. DeshGujarat
