Ahmed Patel raises Bharuch Narmada river salinity issue in Rajya Sabha, suggests solutions
July 27, 2016
New Delhi: Congress leader Ahmed Patel addressing the Rajya Sabha today highlighted the issue of Narmada river drying up in Bharuch district in Gujarat. He brought the attention of the house to the ingress of salt-water from the sea on account of the State government not releasing sufficient water flow from the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
Highlighting the decrease in cultivation and industrial production due to the presence of saline water. Ahmed Patel sought three measures to be taken immediately by the government in mitigating the issue.
First, to constitute an expert team to investigate the issue and identify measures to be taken. Secondly, he requested the State government to regularly release sufficient water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam. And third to start construction of a causeway along Narmada River to stop seawater ingress.
