Bharuch
To counter the problem of salinity and sea water inflow in river bed of Narmada in Bharuch district of Gujarat, 9,000 cusec water was released from Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam today.
Release of water from Narmada dam to downstream areas of river Narmada was on halt for last few months to ensure proper water supply across Gujarat in view of scarcity situation. Due to this Narmada river bed had attracted salinity issue particularly in portion where the river meets sea.
Near Bharuch-Ankleshwar, the width of the river had reduced to 400 meter from earlier 1.5 km. As fresh water levels in the river receded, saline water from the sea almost reached up to 40 kms into the estuary causing problem to farmers and industries.
To counter the situation, release of water from Narmada dam was necessary.
The government today acted accordingly and released water from the dam.
