Umbrella dance at Tarnetar fair enters Guinness World Records

Ahmedabad: A world record was today created when more than 2,000 men and women performed the traditional umbrella dance at the famous Tarnater fair, in Surendranagar district of Gujarat, officials said.

“I congratulate the district administration for setting a world Guinness book record, when over 2,000 people performed traditional umbrella dance at the Tarneter fair,” said Chief Minister Vijay Rupnai, who witnessed the event.

The record has been accepted by Guinness World Records, an official release said.

Traditionally, the dance is performed in rural parts of the state with wooden umbrellas. However, in today’s dance modern colourful umbrellas were used by participants.

The fair is held every year in the village named Tarnater. It is very famous among the rural population of the state, who throng their in large numbers in traditional attire.

Traditional dance performance and traditional games are the main highlight of the fair. The state also organise competition of traditional games in the fair.

Along with the fair exhibition and trade of animals is also conducted at the fair.

“Rural games structure are strengthened due to such fairs,” Rupani said.
