Muslim women take out march against triple talaq in Surat city of Gujarat
May 24, 2017
Surat: Amid the ongoing debates and legal battle over the ‘controversial triple talaq’ issue, Muslim women, who were victims of this cruel practice, today took out a march against it in Surat city and also handed over a memorandum to the police commissioner.
The march of the burka clad women was led by one Sumaiyaben who was divorced by her husband in similar manner on May 12. She was living at her father’s place for some time as her husband and his family members allegedly used to torture her. While she was sitting on a swing outside her father’s house in Hodi Bangla area of Musibatpura locality in the city, her husband came there and after an altercation he beat her up and uttered ‘talaq’ thrice and left.
Sumaiyaben and other victims of triple talaq were also holding various placards with slogans like – “End the triple talaq system”, “I am a victim of triple talaq” and “Give right of refusal to triple talaq to women”.
In the memorandum, the copy of which was also sent to prime minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Vijay Rupani, it has been requested to the government to end the cruel practice which was in-Islamic and unconstitutional, according to them.
