Salinity issue in river Narmada: water discharged from Karjan dam
January 20, 2018
Bharuch: The government of Gujarat has, it is learnt taken a decision to release 600 cu sec water once every fortnight to fight the problem of salinity ingress in downstream areas of river Narmada in Bharuch district.
As per the directive issued by the State government,t he district collector of Narmada had instructed the administration to release 600 cu sec water in river Narmada for two days from Karjan reservoir scheme. The water released from Karjan dam entered river Narmada at Dhanpor where river Karjan meets river Narmada.
After release of 600 cu sec, the discharge was stopped.
Due to lack of release of water from Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam, the river bed of Narmada in downstream areas of Bharuch district, especially in coastal area had attracted salinity ingress. Water supply to industrial area Dahej and 10 villages of Vilayat belt has been scalled down.
It should be noted here that there’s only 11% live water stock left in Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam.
