3500 cu sec water released from Karjan and Sardar Sarovar to give life to river Narmada
January 23, 2018
Bharuch: River Narmada will be alive again on January 24 as the government has released 600 cu sec water from Godbole gate of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam and 2900 cu sec water from Karjan dam in Central Gujarat – in total 3500 cu sec water.
Due to lack of enough water in Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam this year, it was difficult for government to release Narmada water in downstream areas. During high tide, sea water had entered riverbed of Narmada causing salinity and drinking water problem in Dahej-Vilayat areas.
The government after lot of thinking, decided to release water from Karjan dam. At noon on Monday, one gate of Karjan dam was opened for release of 2900 cu sec water in river Narmada. At the same time 600 cu sec water was released from Godbole gate of Narmada dam.
Among others, 3500 cu sec water release will give great relief to Sadhus who were seeking Narmada to get back the life before Narmada Jayanti day.
