Gandhi Ashram road constructed in 1970 to be permanently closed
May 19, 2022
Sabarmati: After a new road starting from opposite Ranip bus stand to the rear side of Parikshit Lal Bridge is completed, the road near Gandhi Ashram used to reach Subhash Bridge from Vadaj will be closed permanently.
Work on the new road is progressing at a fast pace. The old road is being used since before 1972 and it was widened in 1984. The central government has declared the Gandhi Ashram neighborhood as a silent zone. Because of this, ST buses from Vadaj go to Juna Vadaj Ramapirnaa Tekraa area and to Prabodh Raval bridge.
In the coming days, when even other vehicles stop passing from near the Gandhi Ashram, it will truly become a silent zone.
Under the Gandhi Ashram Redevelopment Project, plans are being worked out to redevelop 55 acres which not only includes the land on which the Ashram is located but also covers the homes of those slum dwellers who live opposite to it.
The plans aim to maintain the 50 odd buildings of the Ashram constructed prior to 1947 as it is because of their historical significance. The entry and exit gates of the Ashram will also be changed. The plans also intend to club the road in the middle with the development plan. DeshGujarat
