28 die after consuming chemical mixed with water; Case detected, most accused nabbed in 24 hours; DGP shares details

Gandhinagar: Within 24 hours the crime has been detected. Most accused are rounded up and FIRs are registered. 460 liter chemical has been seized and samples are sent to Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Methyl Alcohol’s 99 per cent presence has been found in the chemical.

The DGP in his briefing stated:

Jayesh supplied chemical

Jayesh alias Raju who works in a godown in Aslali area and stays there. AMOS company keeps Methyl alcohol barrels in godown and it is then transferred to bottle. AMOS does this jobwork for a company in Changodar is supplied 2.5 liter chemical as jobwork.

Jayesh’s relative Sanjay lives in Nabhoi village. Jayesh had on 22nd July supplied 600 liter chemical to Sanjay. It was transferred at Tagdi fatak. Sanjay’s brother Vinod was also involved in it. Sanjay had supplied 200 liter chemical to Pintu and 200 liter chemical to Ajit. Sanjay kept 200 liter with him. Pintu supplied 200 liter chemical to Vallabh, Jatubha, Gajuben (Rojida village), Vipul (Rojida village) and other person. Vipul is dead in this case of spurious liquor.

Jayesh had supplied 600 liter industrial use liquor for the first time. Jayesh had stolen it from the godown. Jayesh was incharge of the godown and was living there. The owner of the godown was unknown about this affair. Jayesh had received Rs. 40,000 for 600 liter chemical.

Chemical is only for industrial use

The liquid which was consumed by victims had equal portion of water and chemical.

The chemical is used in synthetic fiber, pharma, adhesive etc and it is meant for industrial use only.

28 deaths so far

So far 22 persons in Botad district and 6 in Ahmedabad Rural areas – in total 28 are dead. Two are suspected cases and reasons of their deaths need to be probed.

Those affected are taking treatment in Bhavnagar and Asarwa Civil. Dialysis and other required treatment is underway.

FIRs registered

Three offices are registered in Barwala, Ranpur and Ahmedabad Rural. 13 accused are named in FIR and most of them are nabbed. Range IG of Bhanvagar, SP of Botad, SP of Ahmedabad Rural and Range IG of Ahmedabad Rural and ATS team led by Deepan Bhadran have joined the investigation.

Police actions in the area

Police had done six prohibition cases against the local bootlegger. Application was received from Sarpanch about country liquor dens in third month of this year. Six cases were lodged. Six raids were conducted with nil result. Two bootleggers had faced action and one was restricted from entry. Combing was done on 26th April in response to village Sarpanch’s application. Barwala’s Police Sub Inspector was transferred earlier for lethargy. The new PSI who is on duty there for last one month or so has been strict and because of his actions, country liquor could not be sold and therefore chemical was brought in. DeshGujarat
