36th National Games to use Riverfront Sports Complex as one of venues
September 06, 2022
Ahmedabad: Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) has handed over the riverfront sports complex to the Sports Authority of Gujarat to use for National Games 2022 sports events over the next two months.
The riverfront sports complex behind the NID campus is built at the cost of ₹20 crores. It contains 4 cricket practice pitches, 5 tennis courts, 4 multiple sports courts, 2 courts each for volleyball and basketball, a pickleball court, gymnasium, skating rink, skateboard arena, 800m jogging track, a children’s play area, and 2 food courts.
The sports complex was ready in 2021 but not open to the public. As per the sources, even after the Games are over, it won’t be available for public use till next year.
As per a report in TOI, civic authority had given the contract for operating and maintaining the complex to Ahmedabad tenis association on a 20% to 80% profit sharing basis without following any due bidding process. Later this move was questioned by the standing committee chairman and one of the directors on the SRFDCL board, Hitesh Barot that how can public property be handed over to a private entity without a tender process.
Now, AMC is likely to float another tender after the national games are over, which will take another couple of months. So, the complex will be available to the public probably in 2023.
