Illegal constructions in Uparkot fort area removed
May 27, 2023
Junagadh: The Junagadh Municipal Corporation carried out a demolition drive against illegal constructions in the vicinity of the city’s historic Uparkot fort following its renovation.
Joined by approximately 150 police personnel, the administration demolished 18 religious sites and other unauthorized structures last night. A total of 176 illegal mazars have been demolished thus far.
The local Muslim community expressed their agitation against the demolition by conducting a hunger strike during the night. They alleged to have filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court, seeking protection for their religious sites and urging the court to prevent their demolition. According to them, the high court issued a notice to the administration, directing them to halt any further demolition activities until the next hearing of the petition on July 24th. DeshGujarat
