38,000 people evacuated as cyclone Biparjoy approaches Gujarat coast

Gandhinagar: About 37,800 individuals residing near the coast in eight districts of Gujarat have been evacuated as Cyclone Biparjoy approaches the Kutch coast.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port on the evening of June 15, as confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Gujarat government has evacuated a total of 37,794 people along the coastline.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the state government’s emergency operations center to assess the preparedness. The IMD has stated that the cyclone poses a significant threat and is likely to have an impact on Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts. The government aims to evacuate individuals living within 10 km of the shore. One fatality related to the cyclone has been reported thus far. Evacuation operations will continue on Wednesday.

The cyclone is expected to hit the shore near Jakhau port between Mandvi in Kutch and Karachi in Pakistan on Thursday evening. The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds in coastal areas of the Saurashtra-Kutch region, particularly in Kutch, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts. After landfall, Biparjoy is projected to move northeastward towards southern Rajasthan, bringing heavy to very heavy rain to north Gujarat from June 15 to 17.

The government has deployed 17 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 12 teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Morbi, and Valsad districts. DeshGujarat
