Modh Ghanchi and Teli castes were added to OBC list by Congress government in Gujarat in 1994

Gandhinagar: The main opposition Congress party’s leader Rahul Gandhi has today said that the Teli caste in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi took born was added to the list of the Other Backward Class (OBC) by BJP(government). Congress had claimed this even ahead of year 2014 general elections of Lok Sabha. Late BJP leader Arun Jaitley refuted this claim with facts in his blog post in May 2014. Even the Gujarat government had refuted the Congress party’s claim in May 2014 and shared the document of resolution of the year 1994 in which Teli and Modh Chanchi castes were added to the OBC list. It’s worth noting that PM Narendra Modi belongs to Modh Ghanchi caste.

Then Congress Chief Minister Chhabildas Mehta Government of Gujarat added 36 backward castes to the OBC list in July 1994. The Social Welfare Department of the Gujarat government had through its resolution number SaSHaP./1994/1411/A dated 25 July 1994 added Modh Ghanchi caste to the OBC list. The Government of India had later added Modh Ghanchi caste to OBC way before Narendra Modi even became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in the 1999-2000 period.

The State government had in its resolution noted that 36 castes/sub-castes were in the Mandal Commission but not in the Bakshi Commission report and the castes/sub-castes recommended by the Majmudar committee should be added to the list of OBC list. DeshGujarat
