Rajkot: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Malviya Nagar Police Station who was on the run after being accused of fatally beating a youth in custody has been apprehended, however, it is reported that he surrendered himself to the police.
According to the details of the case, Hamirbhai, aka Gopalbhai Devjibhai Rathod, residing in Ambedkar Nagar, got into a dispute with his neighbors, after which Malviya Nagar Police took him into custody on April 14th. During the custody, ASI Ashwin Kangade allegedly assaulted Hamirbhai severely, after which he lost consciousness and was transferred to the hospital. However, Hamirbhai succumbed to his injuries during the treatment.
The deceased’s family members and the Dalit community filed a murder case against the responsible policeman and demanded his immediate arrest, refusing to accept the body at the time, alleging that Hamir’s death was due to police brutality. Following the incident, the accused Sub-Inspector Ashwin went on the run. The police handed over Rathod’s body to his family after much assurance. However, the absconding ASI Kangade evaded the police for over 6 days and was finally arrested on Friday evening. DeshGujarat
