Surat: As many as 14 historical cannons have been found in a plot belonging to the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) near the old Bombay Market here in the city. The redevelopment is ongoing in this plot, which housed the office of the Anti-Encroachment team of the civic body.

It is learned that these cannons were found 10 years ago during excavation at some place in the city. Later, these cannons were placed here in the SMC plot. After that, no care seems to have been taken. Now, curiosity has arisen again as these cannons were found amidst the renovation of the SMC office.

In the past, many artifacts have been found from the fort on the banks of the river Tapi and its surroundings. While efforts should have been made to preserve the historical objects, these cannons were found in a rusting condition as no attention has been paid to them in the last 10 years after their excavation.
