Surat Police deploys 80 teams against wrong-side driving
June 18, 2024
Surat: Starting this week, Surat has strictly enforced traffic rules by deploying 80 teams across the city to catch drivers going the wrong way. Offenders will not face fines but will be detained at police stations for five hours to deter future violations. Repeat offenders may face stricter penalties, including licence cancellation.
To enhance traffic flow, a committee, including the Police Commissioner and inspectors from every police station in Surat is deployed across the city. Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi emphasised that the mission is to enforce traffic rules, not to collect fines. He noted improvements in driver behaviour, such as stopping at red lights even late at night, which was previously uncommon. This change has led to a reduction in accidents compared to the previous year.
Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot inspected the Varachha area, walking from Mini Bazar to Gaushala to check traffic rule compliance yesterday. He praised the positive response from the residents and noted that they have set an example for others. Gehlot also mentioned ongoing efforts to address the issue of two-wheeler congestion and improve left-turn accessibility in busy areas. Gehlot assured that the Surat traffic police and the local police remain committed to enhancing traffic facilities and ensuring the safety of the city’s residents DeshGujarat
