Belt buckle of gold worth ₹11 lakh seized from passenger at Surat Airport

Surat: Customs officials on Sunday nabbed a man arriving at Surat International Airport from Dubai and found gold worth ₹11 lakhs on him. The man had come wearing a belt with a gold buckle.

The 30-year-old man was apprehended when customs officials conducted routine checks on the arrival of the Dubai flight on Sunday. During the security check, the officer noticed the shine of the buckle and called him aside. When the officer removed the belt and inspected it, it was found to contain 150 grams of gold, valued at ₹11 lakhs. The man was released later but the customs seized the buckle.

Earlier in April, a youth was also caught with a gold buckle. It is noteworthy that gold smuggling has increased at the airport following the introduction of Sharjah and Dubai flights. Despite the vigilance of Customs, DRI, CRFS, and the police, smugglers appear undeterred. DeshGujarat
