Water storage situation in some important dams in Gujarat after half of August passed

Gandhinagar: The month of August is half over but some of important dams in Gujarat have not achieved sufficient level of water storage. In relief to the State, the two main dams Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam and Ukai dam have satisfactory level of storage, and the monsoon period of over a month is still left.

The largest dam in Gujarat, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam, is 88.02% full with 8,326.50 MCM of water against its design gross storage of 9,460.00 MCM. The dam is currently witnessing an inflow of around 86,000 cusecs, and with 5 gates open by 0.6 meters, the outflow into the riverbed and canal is over 63,000 and 22,000 cusecs, respectively. The dam wasdeclared full to its highest level at 17 September last year which is birthday of Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi. Another central Gujarat dam, Karjan has sufficient storage of over 68%.

The second-largest dam, Ukai, is 76.77% full at a water level of 102.06 meters, which is close to the rule level of 102.11 meters for September 1st. There is an inflow of over 33,000 cusecs and an outflow of 32,000 cusecs into the riverbed, with 3 gates open by 0.91 meters. Another dam in South Gujarat, Damanganga is 59.91% full.

Kadana Dam, the third largest dam of Gujarat, is not even half full. Against the design gross storage of 1,249.30 MCM, it is only 47.15% full. The dam is currently at a level of 120.02 meters, against the rule level of 126.80 meters for September 1st.

The storage situation at important dams like Dantiwada, Dharoi. Shetrunji,  Machhu, Bhadar etc cannot be considered satisfactory. However, the monsoon season is not yet over, so this situation might improve after another active spell of rain.
