FSSAI issues notices to 200 Gujarat-based oil millers, repackers for using recycled tins
December 01, 2024
Gandhinagar: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued legal notices to around 200 millers, oil producers, and re-packers in Gujarat for using recycled tins. A list of more than 650 such units was compiled by the FSSAI, with notices already sent to 200. The remaining 400 millers will receive notices soon, and further action will follow.
Using recycled tins for packaging edible oil and vegetable ghee is banned under the Food Safety Act. Despite numerous warnings from both the Central and State Governments, many small businesses, including millers, oil producers, traders, and re-packers, continue the practice for profit, putting public health at risk. The FSSAI has warned that severe consequences will follow for entities using or consuming recycled tins if they do not comply.
Penalties may be imposed under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, with some cases already being processed by the Adjudicating Officer. The 200 affected units are spread across cities such as Ahmedabad, Sanand, Changodar, Mehsana, Kadi, Surat, Gondal, and Rajkot. DeshGujarat
