Gujarat Congress raises the issue of State’s public debt
February 21, 2025
Gandhinagar: Alleging that Gujarat’s double-engine government is following the “drink ghee by borrowing” policy, Leader of the Congress Legislative Party, Amit Chavda, stated, “A child born in Gujarat in 2024 will have a debt of Rs 66,000, while a child born in 2027-28 will be burdened with a debt of Rs 89,000.”
As per the official release from the Congress Party leader, “Day by day, the Gujarat government is increasing its debt, and as a result, the burden on the state’s 6 crore people is also rising. According to figures presented by the Gujarat government, the public debt in 2023-24 stood at Rs 3,77,962 crore. As per the revised estimates for 2024-25, this debt has increased to Rs 3,99,633 crore.”
“Considering Gujarat’s population of 6 crore, this translates to a debt of Rs 66,000 per person, including newly born children. Similarly, as per estimates for 2025-26, the debt is projected to rise to Rs 4,55,537 crore. Looking ahead to the next three years, it is expected to reach Rs 4,73,651 crore by the end of 2026-27. Furthermore, according to projections for 2027-28, the state’s debt will surge to Rs 5,38,651 crore, meaning that a child born in Gujarat during that period will bear a debt burden of Rs 89,000,” the release added.
According to responses provided in the assembly today, the state government has taken loans in the last two years primarily from financial institutions and as central debt. A closer look at the figures reveals that approximately Rs 94,000 crore has been borrowed from the market alone during this period. This clearly indicates that the government’s debt is increasing day by day. Due to the government’s flawed policies, this debt burden continues to grow, impacting every individual in the state. The current financial system created by this government raises serious concerns for the future.
