Indian Railways 1st Exclusive Container Rail Terminal (ECRT) inaugurated at Unjha, Gujarat

Mehsana: Indian Railways’ first Exclusive Container Rail Terminal (ECRT) was inaugurated on Wednesday at Unjha in Mehsana district. State Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, local MP Hari Patel, and local MLA Kirit Patel flagged off the first container train loaded with cumin, isabgol, and other spices from Unjha Terminal to Mundra Port Cargo Complex.

A railway spokesperson stated that this marks a historic and proud achievement for the Ahmedabad Division. Unjha, known as the cumin capital of India, has long been a major hub for spice and agricultural trade, significantly contributing to the economy of Gujarat and India.

Until now, goods transportation from this region primarily relied on road networks. To enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and promote sustainable transport, the Ahmedabad Railway Division and its Business Development Unit (BDU) worked extensively to shift this trade to the railway network. This initiative represents a transformational shift in freight transportation.

During this first operation, 100 containers were loaded, generating ₹9.16 lakh in revenue for the railways.

On this occasion, MP Hari Patel stated that cumin is India’s second-most produced spice, and this initiative will boost its export potential. The shift to railway transport will reduce transit time, lower costs, and create a more efficient supply chain. This will enable farmers and traders to deliver their produce faster to both domestic and international markets.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in Gujarat’s agricultural and economic progress. The dedicated efforts of the Business Development Unit of Railways have been instrumental in making this project a success. DeshGujarat
