Gujarat govt unclear on progress and completion timelines of desalination plants

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government could not provide a clear update on the progress of desalination plant projects at two locations in the state. In separate replies in State Assembly, the state government did not specify when the projects in Devbhoomi Dwarka and Kutch districts would be completed.

Desalination Plant at Ganghavi (Harshad), Devbhoomi Dwarka

The 70 MLD capacity desalination plant near Ganghavi in Devbhoomi Dwarka district is being executed by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by M/s Shapoorji Pallonji & Company Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, and Aquatech System Asia Pvt. Ltd. While the government confirmed that physical work is underway, it did not provide a definitive timeline for completion. The project, which follows a hybrid model, is estimated to cost ₹280 crore. Once operational, it is expected to supply 70 MLD of water to Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts.

Desalination Plant in Kutch District

Similarly, the 100 MLD desalination plant at Gundiali village in Mandvi taluka of Kutch district is also being developed by an SPV involving the same companies. While the government stated that physical work is in progress, it did not specify a completion date, mentioning only that the project would be completed “at the earliest.” Notably, despite an estimated ₹300 crore allocation for the project over the past two years, no expenditure had been made by the government as of December 31, 2024.
