Urinate in public, end up on hoardings: Morbi’s cleanliness crackdown

Morbi: Morbi, India’s renowned ceramic hub, is witnessing a sanitation crisis and has taken a stark but unique measure to tackle public urination. The newly formed municipal corporation, in a drastic step, has put up massive hoardings displaying images of individuals relieving themselves in public. Serving as a public warning, the initiative aims to promote hygiene through public shaming.

Six strategically placed hoardings across the city carry a bold message: “Next Could Be You.” This initiative follows the civic body’s aggressive cleanup campaign launched three months ago. Morbi, once admired for its Indo-European architecture, has struggled with waste management, especially after the state government dissolved its municipality following the tragic bridge collapse in 2022.

Municipal Commissioner Swapnil Khare stated that while most residents support cleanliness efforts, some continue to litter and urinate in public. The campaign, which initially targeted public urination, will soon extend to spitting, illegal dumping, and waste burning. Offenders face both public shaming and penalties as civic teams patrol the city, capturing images of those caught urinating in public. DeshGujarat
