Man Dies of Rabies After Caring for Calf which was Bitten by a Dog in the past in Dhanera

Dhanera: A 38-year-old man from Dhakha village in Dhanera taluka has tragically died of rabies after caring for a calf that was infected with the virus. Dinesh Joitabhai Patel passed away on March 24, 2025, due to complications from rabies.

A year prior to his death, Dinesh had treated a calf that had been bitten by a dog. At the time, he was unaware that the calf had contracted rabies from the dog bite. Approximately a year later, the calf began exhibiting symptoms of rabies and died within a few days. During the calf’s illness, Dinesh cared for it, including feeding it jaggery and grass by hand, potentially exposing himself to the infected saliva.

Dinesh was unaware that he had also been infected with the rabies virus. He eventually developed symptoms such as fever, fear of water (hydrophobia), and other signs of rabies. He was admitted to the hospital but tragically passed away on March 24, 2025.

Veterinary doctor Shailesh Modi explained that rabies is a fatal disease and timely treatment is crucial. He advised that anyone bitten by a dog, monkey, or other potentially rabid animal should seek immediate medical attention. He suggested that Dinesh may have contracted the virus through contact with the calf’s saliva if he had any open wounds or cuts on his hands while caring for the animal. This could have allowed the virus to enter his system. DeshGujarat
