‘Replenishing Water Resources Through Borewell Recharge Without Filteration to be Counterproductive’

Kutch: Global Kutch and Kutch Mitra, in response to the call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Water Resources C.R. Patil, have intensified efforts to recharge borewells in the Kutch region. However, concerns have arisen regarding the direct injection of unfiltered rainwater into the ground, potentially leading to the ineffectiveness of the borewell recharge efforts and wasting resources.

Concerns Over Unfiltered Rainwater Injection

Experts warn that directly injecting unfiltered rainwater into borewells could harm the natural filtration system of the ground. Mahendra Gadhvi, former chairman of the District Panchayat’s executive committee, who has been involved in borewell recharge and water conservation in Mundra taluka, stated that this practice is akin to tampering with nature and could inadvertently cause more harm than good. He fears that the unfiltered water may clog the pores in the underground water channels, reducing their water storage capacity. As of now, there is no technology to unclog these pores.

Call for Proper Filtration

Gadhvi stressed the importance of filtering rainwater through a filtration chamber before injecting it into borewells. He noted that the traditional method of constructing injection borewells using iron pipes, which cost around 2 million rupees, has been successfully replaced by a cost-effective method developed by farmers. The government has also approved this design. He urged Global Kutch and Kutch Mitra to ensure that rainwater is properly filtered before being injected into borewells.

Global Kutch to Provide Filtration Chambers

Global Kutch has expressed its willingness to provide filtration chambers in areas where unfiltered rainwater has already been injected into borewells. Interested individuals can contact Global Kutch at 93727 95667 (Bhuj) and 93726 39280 (Mumbai) for further information.
