Surat Traffic Signals to Go Dark During Peak Afternoon Heat
April 20, 2025
Surat:In a move to provide relief to commuters from the scorching heat, the Surat Traffic Department has announced a temporary suspension of traffic signals across the city during the peak afternoon hours. Effective immediately, all traffic signals will be switched off daily between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM. This decision comes as the region grapples with a persistent heatwave, making it extremely uncomfortable for drivers and pedestrians waiting at traffic junctions.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic, Anita Vanani, stated, “Due to the ongoing heatwave, commuters are facing significant discomfort while waiting for traffic signals to change. Considering the well-being of the citizens, we have decided to switch off the timer-based traffic signals from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM for a period of one week.” She further added that if the heatwave conditions persist, the measure might be extended.
The traffic department has also made arrangements to deploy traffic police personnel at key junctions to manage the flow of vehicles during this period. This is to ensure smooth transit and prevent any major congestion. While the signals are off, commuters are urged to exercise caution, follow traffic rules diligently, and give way to vehicles coming from other directions to avoid accidents.
This is not the first time such a measure has been implemented in Surat. Previously, during intense heatwaves, the traffic department has resorted to switching off signals for limited periods to ease the hardship faced by the public.
Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with the traffic police and drive responsibly during the signal-free hours. They believe that with collective effort and caution, the temporary inconvenience caused by switching off the signals can be managed effectively, providing much-needed relief from the heat. The situation will be reviewed after a week to decide on further course of action based on the prevailing weather conditions. DeshGujarat
