174-Year-Old Bhujiya Kotho in Jamnagar Reopens on March 19 After Restoration Work
March 18, 2026
Jamnagar: Jamnagar’s historic Bhujiya Kotho is set to reopen to tourists from March 19, following a restoration that has revived its original grandeur. Once regarded as the tallest structure in the Saurashtra region, the monument holds significant historical importance.
The structure had suffered major damage during the 2001 earthquake. The Jamnagar Municipal Corporation undertook the restoration, conservation, and reconstruction of Bhujiya Kotho at a cost of ₹25 crore under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme. The work was carried out in coordination with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Phase 1 of the project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 20, 2025.
Constructed between 1839 and 1852, Bhujiya Kotho historically served the purposes of security and communication. The restoration has carefully preserved its architectural features, including intricate windows, arches, and structural elements, using traditional techniques.
To maintain authenticity, natural materials such as lime, guggul, multani mitti, gokhru, areetha, and vermilion were used in the restoration process, helping the monument regain its original form.
Heritage Chain to Link Key Landmarks
As part of Phase 2, efforts are underway to connect key heritage sites Khambhaliya Gate, Bhujiya Kotho, Lakhota Museum, and Ranmal Lake through a “heritage chain.” Once completed, visitors will be able to access these historical landmarks through a single entry point. The work is currently in progress. DeshGujarat
