UN Mehta Hospital Ahmedabad Completes 50 Heart Transplants in 2.5 Years

Ahmedabad: In a major milestone, U.N. Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad Civil Medicity has successfully performed 50 heart transplants in just 2.5 years, the hospital announced today.

Providing further details, the Director of the hospital, Dr. Chirag Doshi, said that with the support of the Central and State Governments, the renowned U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre (UNMICRC) in Ahmedabad embarked on the journey of heart transplantation, achieving its first successful heart transplant surgery in September 2022.

Since then, the institution has excelled through unwavering hope, relentless hard work, and dedication. “We are grateful for the government’s commitment to healthcare, which has had a profound impact on the lives of our patients. Our institution has achieved remarkable success in fulfilling the ‘Swasth Bharat’ campaign launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,” Dr. Doshi said.

Dr. Doshi added, “It is a matter of great pride for us that, with government support, we have successfully transplanted hearts in 50 patients, giving them new life. This includes 37 male adults, 11 female adults, and 2 pediatric patients.”

He mentioned that patients come to the hospital from various states, including Gujarat and neighboring states such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Patients from cities like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, and others in Gujarat trust the institution, which highlights their confidence in the hospital.

Notably, the one-year survival rate for heart transplant patients globally is almost 90%. At U.N. Mehta Hospital, this rate has been as high as 92%. U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre (UNMICRC) has also become the fastest institution at the national level to complete 50 heart transplants in such a short period, with the support of the state government, setting a new benchmark for excellence and commitment in heart care.

Government schemes such as PMJAY-MA (Ayushman Bharat), in collaboration with UNM Foundation and other charitable institutions, have played a significant role in providing financial assistance to the weaker sections of society, with 96% of patients receiving treatment free of cost. DeshGujarat
