RS MP Ram Mokariya’s intervention forces govt officer to return ₹25,000 bribe amount
June 04, 2025
Rajkot: Rajya Sabha MP Ram Mokariya, known for speaking out on various issues, has once again sparked conversation—this time by exposing alleged corruption in Rajkot’s Weights & Measures Department. It has come to light that trader known to RS MP was harassed by a department official, prompting Mokariya to intervene, after which the officer returned the bribe amount of ₹25,000 to the trader.
Recounting the incident, Mokariya said he received a call around 5 PM on June 3 from a local factory owner and community leader, who reported being harassed by an official. Mokariya advised him to have the officer call him directly. The officer, Bansilal Chauhan from the Weights & Measures Department, did speak to Mokariya, who told him to impose the legal fine but avoid unnecessary harassment.
Soon after, the trader called back to say the officer had issued a ₹12,000 fine. However, the trader also revealed that the officer had taken an additional ₹25,000. Mokariya immediately confronted the officer, who admitted his mistake and returned the extra money within ten minutes.
Mokariya urged citizens—especially those in Rajkot—to report such instances. “If any government official demands money for doing legitimate work, report them to the ACB or inform public representatives. Corrupt officers must be punished harshly so others think twice before demanding bribes,” he said. He also mentioned that the same officer had tried to meet him earlier but fled when the media arrived.
This isn’t the first time the BJP MP has spoken out against corruption. About a year ago, Mokariya revealed that he had to pay a ₹70,000 bribe to a fire department officer to get his building plan approved, even though he was not a Member of Parliament at the time. DeshGujarat
