7 Pilgrims Drown in Gomti River in Dwarka, 1 Dead
June 05, 2025
Dwarka: A tragic incident took place in the temple town this morning when seven pilgrims from Jamnagar drowned in the Gomti River. Locals and the fire brigade team rushed to the spot after witnessing the incident and rescued the individuals. One young woman lost her life, while six others were rescued and immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The pilgrims had gone to bathe in the river in the afternoon. Due to strong sea currents, the water flow in the Gomti River suddenly increased, causing the seven — four men and three women — to get trapped in the current and drown. The fire team, along with a rescue boat and local camel riders, quickly rescued the victims. Unfortunately, one young woman succumbed to the accident. Officials noted that the timely arrival of the camel rider was crucial in preventing the tragedy from becoming worse.
According to initial reports, all the pilgrims belonged to Jamnagar. The deceased woman has been identified as Bhagyashwari, and her body has been sent for post-mortem, while three rescued women are receiving treatment at a government hospital.
Since May 15, the sea near Dwarka has been turbulent, prompting authorities to ban fishermen from venturing into the sea. Bathing near the seashore and in the Gomti River has also been prohibited. Despite warning boards being displayed, tourists from outside the area often remain unaware of the strong currents, leading to such unfortunate accidents.
This is the third drowning incident in the Gomti River in the last month. Three days ago, an elderly man fell into the river but was saved by security personnel who risked their lives. Another incident on May 21 involved three people drowning in the Gomti River, where a man and his nephew from Patan died, while one person was rescued. DeshGujarat
