44% storage across 207 reservoirs in Gujarat; Sardar Sarovar dam at over 53% capacity: Govt

Gandhinagar: While the monsoon is expected to arrive in Gujarat in the coming days, last year’s widespread and adequate rainfall has ensured that the state’s 207 reservoirs — including the Sardar Sarovar — currently hold 44.18% of their total storage capacity, the Gujarat Government said in an official statement on Tuesday.

The Sardar Sarovar Project, considered Gujarat’s lifeline, alone has 53.04% of its capacity. This stored water will be utilized to meet citizens’ needs in the near future. According to the Water Resources Department, Gandhinagar, the state’s reservoirs had 40.81% water storage on the same date last year (June 10, 2024).

Currently, Central Gujarat has the highest storage with 44.08% across 17 reservoirs, followed by 43.25% in 13 reservoirs in South Gujarat, 29.38% in 15 reservoirs in North Gujarat, 28.10% in 141 reservoirs in Saurashtra, and over 27.57% in 20 reservoirs in Kutch.

Among individual reservoirs, more than 91% storage is reported in Dholidhaja (Surendranagar district) and Machhu-3 (Morbi). Kalaghogha in Kutch has over 82%, Bhadar-2 in Rajkot more than 77%, Sukhi in Chhota Udepur over 74%, and Aji-2 in Rajkot more than 73% of capacity filled.

Overall, six reservoirs in the state are filled between 70–100%, 20 reservoirs between 50–70%, and 71 reservoirs between 25–50%. This has enabled the government to ensure adequate water supply to both rural and urban areas of the state even during the summer season, the release added. DeshGujarat
