Jal Yatra of Lord Jagannath Held with Grandeur Ahead of Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The city witnessed a vibrant religious spectacle on Wednesday morning as the traditional Jal Yatra of Lord Jagannath was held with deep devotion and cultural fervour. Organized on the auspicious occasion of Jeth Sud Poonam, this sacred ritual marks a key milestone in the lead-up to the city’s 148th annual Rath Yatra, scheduled for June 27.

The procession, led by the chief priest of the Jagannath Temple, Sant Dilipdas Maharaj, unfolded with traditional devotion. In keeping with ritual practices, holy water from the Sabarmati River was brought to the temple for the Maha Abhishek — a sacred bathing ceremony performed 11 times during the day. Devotees joined the procession with copper pots (kalash) balanced on their heads, chanting hymns and singing devotional songs. The Jal Yatra signifies spiritual purification and prepares devotees for the divine journey of the Rath Yatra.

“The event has started with immense enthusiasm, and people are participating with heartfelt devotion alongside saints and religious leaders,” shared Sant Dilipdas Maharaj.

Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi assured that comprehensive preparations are underway to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the Rath Yatra on June 27. Emphasising the event’s blend of spiritual and administrative importance, he affirmed the state’s commitment to upholding both tradition and order.

In a notable change this year, the water was drawn from the middle of the Sabarmati River due to water hyacinth along the banks. An air-conditioned cruise was used for the collection, carrying the temple’s chief priest Sant Dilipdas Maharaj, trustees, and political leaders. Upon return, a grand aarti was held on the riverbank, elevating the sanctity of the moment.

With the successful completion of the Jal Yatra, momentum now builds for the grand Rath Yatra — one of Gujarat’s most significant and widely celebrated religious festivals. DeshGujarat
