IMA Gujarat seeks financial aid for crash-hit med students; Tata issued ₹1 crore compensation

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (GSB-IMA) has appealed to Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran for compensation for medical students impacted by the Air India Flight 171 crash, similar to the relief announced for passengers.

In a letter sent on Friday, the GSB-IMA commended Air India’s gesture of providing ₹1 crore in compensation to the families of deceased passengers and funding the renovation of the BJMC college hostel. The association urged the company to also extend financial aid and necessary support to the medical students who were present at the crash site and either sustained injuries or lost their lives.

“We humbly request you to also consider extending financial assistance & necessary support to the medical students, present at crash site who were injured or lost their lives in this unfortunate event. These individuals were not only victims but also future pillars of our healthcare system, and their well-being and families deserve similar care and support. Accordingly we earnestly request you to declare immediately similar help to the the medical students injured or who had lost the life,” the letter stated.

Meanwhile, the company in Tata Sons Spokesperson said, “As stated earlier, Tata Group will provide Rs. 1 crore to the families of each person who lost their lives including passengers, crew members and individuals on the premises. Medical expenses of all those injured will also be covered while ensuring necessary care and support.”
