How much of Gujarat is now covered by the southwest monsoon?
June 17, 2025
Ahmedabad: The southwest monsoon, which made its onset over Gujarat on June 16, has now advanced further into more parts of the state as well as the North Arabian Sea. As of 12 noon today, the monsoon has covered most of Gujarat, with only a few parts of North Gujarat—Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, and marginal regions of Aravalli, Mahisagar, and Dahod—yet to be covered.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Deesa in Gujarat and is steadily moving northward. Weather officials say conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to cover the remaining parts of Gujarat, the North Arabian Sea, and more areas of Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh within the next two days.
The IMD in its official forecast states, “Southwest Monsoon has further advanced over some more parts of North Arabian Sea and Gujarat and remaining parts of Vidarbha, more parts of Madhya Pradesh; most parts of Chhattisgarh; remaining parts of Odisha; some parts of Jharkhand; entire Gangetic West Bengal and remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and some parts of Bihar”
The forecast adds, “The Northern Limit of Monsoon passes through 24.0°N/60°E, 24.0°N/65°E, Deesa, Indore, Panchmarhi, Mandla, Ambikapur, Hazaribagh, Supaul and 29.0°N/84.0°E.”
Meanwhile, under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and its surrounding regions, a low-pressure area has formed. This system extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and is expected to move northward in the next 24 hours. A trough line from this low-pressure system stretches across Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh up to Jharkhand, which is likely to enhance rainfall activity in Gujarat and neighbouring states.
