Ahmedabad: In an effort to preserve Vastrapur Lake and maintain its water levels year-round, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will set up two million litres per day (MLD) tertiary treatment plants at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore to supply treated sewage water into the lake.

AMC Water Committee chairman Dilip Bagaria said that six sewage lines previously releasing untreated wastewater into the lake have been disconnected. As a temporary measure, untreated Narmada water was released to maintain lake levels. A 0.5 MLD treatment plant is already operational and is being used for irrigating public gardens and filling nuisance tankers. However, to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly solution, AMC will install a larger 2 MLD treatment plant once the ongoing lake development work concludes. The treated water will then be discharged into the lake regularly.

It is noteworthy that the redevelopment of Vastrapur Lake, which has been closed for over a year, continues to face delays due to slow progress and frequent changes in planning. Although the lake was closed again in February 2024 with plans to reopen it by August, repeated design revisions and escalating costs have pushed the timeline further, with no completion in sight.
